FILMMAKER INTENSIVE
THE BRIDGE
What is THE BRIDGE?
THE BRIDGE is a 3-day intensive workshop for 8 - 10 filmmakers led by award-winning director James Ward Byrkit.
It is not a production workshop. We will not be making a film and you do not need gear.
Each day is built around group discussions, guided exercises and direct mentorship on your specific project.
You’ll leave with:
-
The strongest story possible
-
A clear structure for your production
-
A confident plan to self-start
Why THE BRIDGE?
THE BRIDGE leads filmmakers over their obstacles so that they can start making their films now.
Many filmmakers have ideas, scripts and fragments of projects without a clear path across the gap to a finished film.
THE BRIDGE exists to span that gap.
Each edition of THE BRIDGE is tailored to the needs of the 8 - 10 filmmakers invited into the cohort.
The focus is on your story, your film, your resources, and a way of working that you can take home.
Who this is for
-
Independent filmmakers frustrated by stagnation or the traditional system
-
Aspiring directors who don’t want to wait for permission from the industry
-
Creatives who want to make their first short or feature in the next 12 months
-
Filmmakers who feel isolated and want a small, focused community
What we explore
Building stories that don't depend on big budgets
Learn how to build films around powerful story architecture without needing massive locations, unrealistic gear, or a large crew.
Turn constraints into creative engines
Discover how limitations - location, time, budget, crew size - become the source of originality. You'll develop a repeatable method for designing within them.
Build films around actors, not equipment
Explore directing approaches based on improvisation, collaboration and real-time discovery. You'll learn practical ways of rehearsing and shooting with actors that will help generate and capture authentic performances.
Shooting for practical outcomes
Get hands-on experience composing, blocking and using the power of the frame so that each shot has narrative and emotional weight. Leave with practical shot-design tools that make a low-budget sequence feel intentional and cinematic.
Learn ancient storytelling patterns and their modern corollaries
Powerful stories work because they reference deeply engrained systems within tribes of humans. From rom-coms to superhero movies, it’s about survival, hierarchy and identity. You’ll learn how to borrow and subvert these patterns in your own work.
Develop practical tools to make your own film
Discover concrete approaches to writing, preparation, and production that make it possible to move from idea to finished film.
The making of COHERENCE
COHERENCE was created outside traditional systems. Without studio backing, a traditional script, a crew or conventional resources, it reached global audiences and won countless awards. It is now required viewing in film schools around the world.
Discover how a film can be built from the ground up using the resources that are available - and how those same principles apply to your own work.
