James Ward Byrkit is an award-winning writer and director known for his cult science fiction hit COHERENCE, which won Best Screenplay and Best Director at over 15 film festivals around the world. COHERENCE is a master class in independent, low budget filmmaking that has become required viewing at universities.
His career bridges two worlds: the resourceful intensity of independent film and the scale of major Hollywood productions. He co-wrote the Academy Award–winning film RANGO and has worked as a conceptual artist and lead storyboard artist on PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, BABY DRIVER, MISSION TO MARS, and THE RING. He has sold screenplays and developed projects with Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks, Paramount, Netflix, A&E Studios, AMC, and Walt Disney Studios.
Byrkit's recent series SHATTER BELT continues his exploration of consciousness and transformation - questions that sit at the heart of his work.
He grew up in the high desert of northern Arizona surrounded by vast skies and the rugged geography of the Verde Valley. His father, a professor and cartographer, spent years mapping the region – charting mesas, rivers and ancient trails. These early influences give Byrkit an awareness of place, possibility and the power of landscapes.
Byrkit's path has included both extraordinary opportunities and profound challenges, leading him to take creative risks and build meaningful work outside of the studio system.
Decades of persistence and resilience navigating the unpredictable terrain of Hollywood have given him master skills to merge bold creative vision with practical steps. This fuels his passion to lead immersive experiences that help filmmakers avoid years of trial and error and the frustration of waiting for permission to make their films.
